“In 10 chapters, we cover everything from cellular damage to the final stage, which is the beginning of the cessation of the habit and all the support. We hope it arrives in several locations, diverse audiences so that we can play our main and motivating role: bring correct and quality information to the population, for academia, based on the social impact that the actions of a postgraduate program should focus on“, explains Prof. Dra. Laís Concilio, coordenadora dos programas de mestrado e doutorado em Ciências da Saúde.

The book addresses, mainly, electronic cigarettes, which saw an increase in consumption of almost 600% in Brazil between 2018 and 2023, apesar de serem proibidos.

According to the World Health Organization (OMS), eight million people die each year from diseases caused by tobacco consumption, one million of them are considered “passive smokers”. PhD student in Health Sciences, a Me. Camila Moreno, oncology nurse at the National Cancer Institute (INCA), explains

“People are aware that smoking is bad for their health.. But people associate a lot with the individual themselves. Tobacco consumption causes dozens of diseases, from asthma to lung cancer. People are aware, but not the conscience of the whole and they also don’t think about the passive smoker”, explica.

A médica oncologista clínica Cristiane Dias Bittencourt explica quais são os malefícios causados pelo cigarro.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which are progressive and irreversible diseases. The number of masters and doctors employed in Brazil has shown a significant increase in the last 12 years. The data are from the study "Brazil: masters and doctors”, released in June 2024 by the Center for Management and Strategic Study (CGEE), social organization supervised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI).

According to research, the number of masters with formal employment jumped from 184,860, em 2009, to 441,983, em 2021, increase equivalent to 139%. The number of formally employed doctors registered an even greater increase, was 73,767, em 2009, to 215,530, em 2021, growth of 192,2%.

According to the Vice-Rector of Research and Postgraduate Studies at UNITAU, Profa. Dra. Monica Franchi Carniello, One of the factors that contributed to this increase was the expansion of the national postgraduate system.

“Em 2010, there were 194 municipalities with stricto sensu courses. Em 2022, the number rose to 324 municipalities, according to the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). This process provided the opportunity to expand the training of masters and doctors, and this is reflected in the presence of qualified professionals in the job market”, afirma.

In this context, the Vice-Rector of Research and Postgraduate Studies highlights the importance of institutions such as UNITAU, that contribute to reducing territorial asymmetries in postgraduate studies in Brazil, for providing opportunities for the training of masters and doctors in cities in the interior of the country.

“The construction of scientific knowledge about the region in which our University is located contributes to the process of regional development and qualifies professionals to act as agents of social transformation,  in addition to boosting the economy”, diz.

Areas of Education, Public Administration and Health concentrate a greater number of masters and doctors

According to the CGEE study, em 2021, the areas that most employed professionals with master's and doctoral degrees were Education (37,7% of masters and 72% of doctors); Public Administration, Defense and Social Security (33,8% of masters and 14,2% of doctors); and Health (5,9% of masters and 3,9% of doctors).

Graduated from the UNITAU Medicine course 16 years ago, José Roberto V. Miranda, who is an orthopedic traumatologist, shoulder and elbow surgeon and sports doctor, decided to enroll in the master's degree in Health Sciences at UNITAU, Caraguá campus, com foco no desenvolvimento profissional e nas novas oportunidades que o título pode trazer para a carreira.

“I want to enrich my CV and develop professionally. I also intend to, not future, return to the University as a professor and, who knows, give back to students all the knowledge I gained here”, afirma o médico.

Another relevant piece of data from the CGEE research is that the concentration of qualified professionals in the Education sector reduced between 2010 and 2021, em 5,4 percentage points in the total of masters and 2,1% percentage points in the total number of doctors. The numbers indicate that masters and doctors are gaining more space in other areas, such as public and private companies, for example, and producing, more and more, knowledge through research applied to market needs.

“There is a gradual transformation in the understanding of the scope of work of masters and doctors. In addition to working at universities, which is fundamental, masters and doctors can work in other types of public and private organizations. Professional master’s degrees played an important role in this process, for emphasizing applied research and attracting students who work in diverse organizations. It is important to highlight that expanding interactions with the world of work is one of the aspects listed in the National Postgraduate Plan 2024-2028”, afirma a Pró-reitora da UNITAU.

Applying scientific knowledge in everyday professional life is precisely the objective of pediatric nutritionist Daniele Canineo, que também integra a turma de mestrado em Ciências da Saúde da UNITAU no campus Caraguá.

The numerous contributions to the Brazilian Society of Clinical Research Professionals (SBPPC) guaranteed the presence of Prof.. Dr. José Roberto Cortelli, professor of the undergraduate course in Dentistry and the master's and doctoral programs in Health Sciences at the University of Taubaté (Unitau), on the list of honorees from the São Paulo City Council last Monday, June 17th. The ceremony, held in the capital of São Paulo, marked the celebration of 25 years of SBPPC, who received the Silver Salute honor.

Dental surgeon, researcher and professor in dentistry with a focus on periodontics, implant dentistry and dental prosthesis, Prof. Dr. José Roberto Cortelli was the only dentist on the list of 12 professionals, from all over Brazil, chosen to receive recognition at the São Paulo Chamber. The list of honorees also included doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians, biologists, entre outros.

“This recognition for me is spectacular. I have a long history in research, developing clinical studies. I have been a professor at UNITAU for 34 years alone. Recognition is something that makes me very proud, But I don't win this prize alone. The tribute must be shared with all colleagues and partners who worked with me throughout this journey”, afirma o professor.

Professors and Master's and Doctorate students at the University of Taubaté (Unitau) presented seven research projects at the 40th edition of the Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society of Dental Research (SBPqO), in Campinas – SP. Among the topics covered, diagnosing oral cancer through saliva, periodontite e cerâmicas odontológicas.

The SBPqO, is the largest dental research event in Latin America. It brings together several groups from other Universities in the country and enables networking with other institutions, a realização de parcerias e o compartilhamento de publicações científicas e acadêmicas.

“It is a very important event because it presents the most current. There is great participation from high-level dentistry and I am very happy to see our students inserted in this context”, comments the Professor. Dra. Laís Regiane da Silva Council, coordenadora do Mestrado e Doutorado em Ciências da Saúde da UNITAU.

On the first day of meeting, the coordinators of the Postgraduate courses met with the general director of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). Throughout the program, conversations were held, palestras e alinhamento de ações dos programas.

One of the highlights of the University of Taubaté in Reunion was the presentation of the research on diagnosing oral cancer through patient saliva and which is coordinated by Prof.. Dr. Luis Felipe das Chagas and Silva de Carvalho. The objective of the work is to evaluate various systemic conditions to carry out early diagnoses.. The study is funded by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP).

Graduate of the Doctorate in Health Sciences, MAIARA RODRIGUES DE FREITAS, made a presentation of the research produced during the training. She says that the event adds knowledge and experience for professionalization in this area..  

“I have participated in this congress since 2017, I started presenting my scientific initiation work and was, year after year, presenting the work developed throughout my Masters and Doctorate”, conta a egressa.

During the lectures, the scientific research “Influence of anatomic reference on the buccal contour of prosthetic crowns” was voluntarily cited in Congress. This study presented the evaluation of the fidelity of the reproduction of the oral contour in an upper left canine, using the indirect laminated veneer technique. One of the authors of the research is Profa. Dra. Laís Regiane da Silva Council, que ficou orgulhosa da menção.

Partial balance released by the Organizing Committee of the International Science Congress, technology and development (Cicted) from the University of Taubaté (Unitau) demonstra prevalência nas submissões de trabalhos ligados à área de Ciências da Saúde nesta décima edição.

With registration closing on September 30th, the commission registered a total of 466 works presented, of which 170 are directly linked to this segment. The area of ​​Human Sciences is in second place with 70 works presented, followed by the area of ​​Applied Social Sciences with 61 submissions. Engineering areas complete the list. (58 works), Biological Sciences (43 works), Agricultural Sciences (31 works), Linguistics, Letters and Arts (15 works), Technology (10 works) and Exact and Earth Sciences (8 works).

Regarding the subareas, medical courses (45 works) and Nursing (41 works) foram os que mais apresentaram contribuições ao Congresso.
